Small surface, big impact: planning a backsplash

A practical guide to samples, layout, edges, and the details that make a backsplash feel considered.

Renovation detail from Victory’s project gallery

A backsplash can change the feel of a kitchen without changing every cabinet. The most useful decisions happen when you look at the tile, surrounding finishes, and layout together.

Choose samples in the room.

Place samples near the countertop and cabinets. Check them in different light. A warm white and a cool white may look very different when they sit beside a fixed surface.

Look at pattern and scale.

A simple tile can create a quiet background; a more detailed pattern can become the focal point. Think about how much of the surface remains visible around appliances and outlets. Ask to discuss the starting point and layout before installation.

Plan the edges.

Where does the tile stop? What happens at an exposed side, inside corner, window, or cabinet? Edge treatments and transitions belong in the initial scope, so the finished result feels intentional.

Include preparation in the conversation.

Share photos of the existing surface and explain what is coming off. Discuss the condition of the wall and any work by other trades before installation begins. That helps clarify the sequence of work.

Bring your ideas.

Save a few examples and note what you like about each one: color, shape, grout contrast, or the way it meets the counter. Explore our project gallery, then send your ideas through the project planner.
